Hailes Abbey by Jan Kip & Leonard Knyff, 1712
I have had a lifelong interest in the Monasteries of England and Wales. As a lockdown exercise I began to write a series of essays on their stories after dissolution which are many and varied.
I intend to post some of these on this blog. They cover:
the transformation of monasteries into homes, parish churches, cathedrals and other buildings
monasteries seen through the eyes of great antiquarians
the impact of the romantic movement
the development of monastic archaeology
remnants: what were the forces that led to ruination for many sites ?
finally monasteries reclaimed - some sites have been re-inhabited
